Recycled glass countertops are a unique style option for those seeking a surface other than Quartz or natural stone. Chip based recycled glass products, such as Vetrazzo and Curava, offer a distinctive look with depth and translucence by combining glass chips of varied colors and materials.
Visually interesting and eco-friendly, recycled glass countertops are composed of approximately 85% recycled glass from bottles, porcelain sinks and pottery, and the remaining material is a combination of a binder and pigment. There are two different types of binders that can be used. One is a cement-base product, the other type uses a resin formula as a binder.
It’s important to note which binder is used in the products your are considering for use in your home. It makes a difference in the suggested on-going maintenance, the prevention of staining and etching, and the overall look of your counters with the passage of time.
Cement based products are porous; a sealer must be applied periodically to help protect against staining. It is also required to protect them from acidic substances like citric juices; red wine and vinegar that can etch the surface.
Resin based productss provide a non-porous surface and don't require sealing to protect them from stains or solutions that might injure the surface. In that way they're similar to Quartz countertops.
When choosing an edge treatment, we don't recommend using edge styles that result in thinner cross-sections, like an Ogee. It raises the risk of the glass chips getting knocked loose.
